Salmon Fishing

Salmon arguably represents one of the greatest and most prestigious challenges in the world of fishing. The most coveted prize in salmon fishing is the king salmon (also known as the Chinook), a fish whose weight can surpass 100 pounds.

Even if you are fortunate enough to hook such a fish, its feistiness and brute strength can defeat even the most seasoned of anglers. Luckily, the payoff of salmon fishing is not limited to the Chinook or its slightly less-bulky cousin, the Coho; salmon of all sizes provide a gratifying and appetizing catch.

Here are some ideas to help you bag such a fish on your next trip out on the waters:

You cannot put a square peg into a round hole.
If you do not have the proper equipment, you will never be able to catch what you are after. Decide first what kind of salmon you want to catch. If a Chinook or Coho is what you want, do not show up with a fly fishing rod. Get a heavy duty rod and be prepared for battle: either the fish into the boat or you into the water. If you are after a smaller salmon, grab your lightweight, agile rod. Combining flexibility, agility and strength, graphite steel rods are the best option for general salmon fishing. The same goes for the reel – get a power-assist one for the big boys or a smaller one allowing better touch and control for the lighter fish.

Fishing line should be taken into consideration, too. No angler wants his line to break while reeling in a prize catch, but sturdier lines often are more visible and scare off potential bites. Experiment with different kinds to see what works best for you.

To conquer the fish, learn to think like the fish.
What does this fish like and dislike? If you do not know the answer, you quickly will become stymied in your attempt to reel in this tasty treat. Stay one step ahead of your prey and lure it toward you.

-In order to stay protected from its predators, salmon most often hide in murky waters stocked with plankton and other particles. Ditch the clear waters; they only will appear there if they are especially famished.
- Scan the cooler, darker waters – especially at times when the sun is down. Warmer water only attracts salmon during feeding time.
- Move downstream. That way, not only will the salmon have to deal with the pressure of your rod, but also the current going against it.

Make the fish want to come to you.
Enticing a salmon to come to you is the only way to catch one. The lure must attract its attention.

-Sharpen your hook and use large (five to seven inch) bait. Though one kind of bait is not definitively better than another, salmon usually feed on herring or squid. You also may succeed with anchovies. Salmon roe (eggs) are an expensive, but often irresistible treat to get the fish to bite.
-Salmon entering the spawning season become especially sensitive to shades of green and blue. Plan your jigs accordingly.

Technique, people.

-Once you have baited your hook, learn how to use it. By erratically rolling your jig in the water, giving the impression the lure is wounded or struggling, the salmon will be especially attracted to it.
-Water skimming is another salmon fishing technique. Cast out. Without waiting for your jig to sink, begin a steady retrieve into your boat. If done well, this will replicate the smooth motion of a minnow skimming the top of the water.
-If you are fortunate enough to get a bite, do not overreact. Let the hook settle into the mouth for a moment before you begin to reel in. Reel in too soon and you will lose your catch.

Above all else, have fun out on the waters. Salmon fishing is an activity attracting lifers and first-timers alike. Indeed, the thrill of the catch keeps fishermen coming back for more.

And I do not need to tell you how good that salmon will taste if you are able to reel one in.
